Angus MacKay writes "This tune is apparently very old, but the date of its composition has not transpired."

It appears in Angus MacKay's book and the Campbell Canntaireachd where there are slight differences to Angus MacKay.

Two brothers, Alan of Glendessary and Archibald of Dungallon married sisters, daughters of Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel. By his wife, Isabel, Archibald had two sons, John and Archibald, and three daughters, of whom Jean married Dr Archibald Cameron, who was executed in 1753 as a rebel of 1745. The subject of the tune was presumably John, son of Archibald and Isabel who left no son and was succeeded by his brother.
