Piobaireachd Society Annual Conference 2020


This year’s conference will be held in the Piping Centre, McPhater Street, Glasgow, on March 21st at 9 for 9.30am. As of Feb 3 the Centre still had six double rooms available for the Saturday night and four for the Friday night of the Conference weekend. These are available at £90 per single occupancy (breakfast included) or £120 per double occupancy (breakfast included). There is also 10% discount on these prices if members quote ‘Piobaireachd Society Conference’ when booking. Other good accommodation deals are to be found on line and there are plenty of beds nearby. For those travelling, we will meet in the Centre on the Friday evening from 7pm for a relaxed get together, a few drinks and tunes. The conference proper starts the following day and these are the topics (in no particular order):

  • Elusive Appogiatura and James Campbell – Robert Wallace
  • The Life and Music of Hugh MacCallum – Ronald MacShannon
  • The Musical Legacy of the MacKays of Raasay – John Frater
  • The Boys’ Brigade and its Contribution to Piping – John Shone
  • Set Tunes – Alan Forbes, Roddy Livingstone, Jack Taylor, Robert Wallace and Bill Wotherspoon will perform and discuss excerpts from the 2020 Senior list for Oban and Inverness

Papers will be short, no more than 30 – 40 minutes and there will an emphasis on music illustrations. The AGM, annual dinner and piping ceilidh will follow in the late afternoon/evening. The conference is open to non-members. The full fee (£55) includes lunch and dinner and morning and afternoon tea/coffee; the £10 student fee excludes refreshment. The dinner only fee (£25) is for those who may wish to join a partner in the evening. The two other options are a day fee with lunch (£35) and without (£30). The Piping Centre offers a high standard of cuisine and a full selection of wines and spirits.
