Information

The Piobaireachd Society's notes indicate that there is some dubiety about the meaning of the Gaelic name of this tune. The note suggests that it might mean the shingly or gravelly hill. If however Griam not Griain is correct, the piobaireachd may refer to a famous incident in the history of Sutherland which gave rise to a situation truly worthy of such a tune, and which occurred in 1601. The story and the evidence for this possible mistake in the title is given in "The History and Structure of Ceol Mor" by Alex Haddow.
