Information
This tune is found in the Campbell Canntaireachd and in the manuscripts of Angus MacKay and Duncan Campbell.
Murray Henderson won the Inverness Gold Medal with this tune in 1975. This recording was made in 2023, and is of the version in the first edition of PS book 9.
Although a fairly simple tune, at least three ways of playing it may be contemplated. The first edition of PS 9 contained an inaccurate version derived from the Campbell Canntaireachd and was withdrawn and replaced by an alternative transcription. The forthcoming reprint of PS 9 will contain the Angus Mackay setting, and the scores of the two earlier versions will be included also for completeness.
The Canntaireachd version has a suibhal variation and doubling which are not in the Angus Mackay setting. There are many other differences between the versions and, rather than itemise them, the three scores, together with the editorial notes proposed for the reprint of PS 9 are available below. All are permissible for the purposes of the Silver Medal competitions in 2013, as is any other setting for which there is suitable authority.
Note that in the version included in the 2nd edition of book 9 (the Angus Mackay setting), the final D taorluath in each line of the taorluath doubling is closed to low G, whereas the final D crunluaths are not. It is acceptable to play both closed to low G.
A crunluath a mach is expected in this tune.
