Information

There are at least 8 tunes in the Campbell Canntaireachd with this cryptic title. The PS editors have attempted to get an answer to the obvious query - what was "The Cragich"?

A careful consideration of internal and other evidence leads to the belief that the compiler of these manuscripts considered some of his tunes "rough". Possibly metrically unsatisfactory; and it is considered that the term "Cragich" was used as equivalent to "rough" or "irregular" rather than it implied another source volume for these tunes. The internal evidence is strongly in support of this though not absolutely conclusive: most of the Cragich tunes are clearly unbalanced metrically.

Other tunes similarly named in the Canntaireachd include MacLeod's Short Tune, Donald of Laggan, and the nameless tune hihiotrotro. The remaining five are published in Pipers Meeting, New Tunes from the Campbell Canntaireachd.
