The History & Structure of Ceol Mor
This book by Professor Alec Haddow provides a wealth of historical and musicological information on piobaireachd. First published in 1982 by the University of Glasgow but now by the Piobaireachd Society, the book has never been out of print and within its 224 pages there is invaluable information on the background to 194 tunes.
As David Hannay writes in his Foreword: ‘Although his time was limited [Professor Haddow died aged 65 in 1978], Alec Haddow’s achievement for piping, as in other spheres, was outstanding. When he started just over ten years previously, the musical structure of piobaireachd was poorly understood and there was little interest in its history. Due to his efforts the construction pattern of the music has been partially unravelled, and ther is an increasing interest in the historical background which gave rise to this unique achievement of Western Art…….
