Information

This tune is said by Angus MacKay to be a composition of William MacDonald of Vallay. It is published in Angus MacKay's book and he relates that the tune was composed after Sir James MacDonald's recovery after being shot accidentally by Colonel MacLeod of Tallisker when on a stalking expedition in North Uist in 1664. The people of the island believed that the shooting was intentional and were with difficulty dissuaded from killing Colonel MacLeod. Angus MacKay records "Sir James was confined by this accident for some considerable time. and when he had recovered so far as he was able to leave his chamber, Vallay, who was an excellent performer on the Bagpipes, composed a salutation, to evince his joy in seeing Sir James restored to health"

It is recorded also by Donald MacDonald Junior, Peter Reid, and in Lady Doyle's manuscript, where the setting is consistent and complete. Details of this and the score is reproduced in PS book 14.
