Information

This tune is said to be the composition of Ailean nan Sop, a noted freebooter of the 16th century. He was the scion of the Duart family and there are several stories accounting for his nickname. One is that, being of doubtful legitimacy, he was born in a corn barn; another is that he was born in a hayfield; a third is that he was in the habit of setting alight bundles of straw or hay in order to smoke his victims out of the caves in which they had taken refuge.

Around 1910 Angus MacDonald of Morar in a conversation with one of the PS editors implied that it was one of his favourite competition tunes, and in 1835 it figured in the lists of Angus MacKay and his brother John.

It is in Angus MacKay's book and the Campbell Canntaireachd where it has no name.
